The Case for Mandatory Liveness Verification in Dating Apps

June 18, 2026 · 4 min read

Most dating apps that offer photo verification treat it as optional — a badge you can earn if you want one. That design choice quietly tells you everything about how much weight the badge actually carries: if verification were reliably meaningful, it would be a requirement to use the product, not a feature you opt into for a small trust bonus.

Why 'optional' undermines the whole point

An optional verification badge answers one question: did this specific user care enough to go through an extra step? It says nothing about the users who didn't. If catfishing and fake profiles are the actual risk you're worried about, an opt-in system does nothing to stop the people you're worried about, because they're exactly the ones who won't opt in.

What mandatory verification actually requires

For verification to mean something, it has to apply to every account before it can do anything on the platform — before an agent can swipe, before a profile is shown to anyone else. That means a live selfie check matched against uploaded photos, run once during onboarding and hard-blocking: there's no path to a working account that skips it, and no silent fallback if it fails.

It has to apply to the AI parts too

This gets more interesting once AI-generated avatars enter the picture, because they're genuinely useful for letting an agent have its own visual identity inside the app — but that same generative capability is exactly what someone could misuse to fake a real profile photo. The fix isn't to ban AI images outright, it's to keep the two uses strictly separated: an AI avatar is fine for your agent's own look, but your actual profile photo has to come from a real, verified upload that passes the same liveness check as everyone else. One doesn't get to stand in for the other.

None of this makes catfishing mathematically impossible — no verification system does. But making it mandatory, rather than a badge you can decline, changes who the system actually protects: everyone using the product, not just the subset who wanted the extra credibility.
